In a recent turn of events, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken a decisive step by confiscating the passports belonging to Betta Edu, the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, and her predecessor, Sadiya Umar-Farouq.
According to a reliable source within the EFCC, this move was made to discourage any potential attempts by Edu and Umar-Farouk to flee the country amidst the ongoing investigation into an alleged corruption scandal within the ministry.
"The commission has taken possession of the passports of both former ministers, Sadiya Umar-Farouq and Betta Edu.
"In addition, Mrs. Halima Shehu's passport has also been temporarily confiscated until the investigations reach a conclusion. The commission is keen on preventing any of them from leaving the country as long as unanswered questions persist," the source stated.
These actions follow the exposure of a leaked memo, disclosing Edu's request to the Federation's Accountant General for the disbursement of N585 million, earmarked for vulnerable individuals, into a private account belonging to one Oniyelu Bridget Mojisola.
Simultaneously, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, the former Minister who served under Muhammadu Buhari, is currently under interrogation regarding alleged fraudulent activities that occurred during her tenure.
Halima Shehu, the suspended Chief Executive Officer of the National Social Investment Programme Agency, is also undergoing scrutiny by the EFCC. The developments paint a complex picture of an ongoing investigation into financial impropriety within the ministry.
