The Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, has emphasized the importance of traditional rulers in Nigeria's political process. During a courtesy visit by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, the Emir stated that the request for roles for traditional rulers in the constitution is not an attempt to create another tier of government in the country.
The Emir expressed surprise that politicians who seek their blessings during elections disappear after winning, only to see traditional rulers as stumbling blocks. He clarified that the traditional institution has played important roles since the first and second republics and continues to do so till today.
The Emir also stated that the fear of most politicians is that traditional rulers want to create another level of government. However, he clarified that traditional rulers have no intention of creating another level of government and that their role is here to stay.
The Emir also spoke on behalf of other traditional rulers, including the Sultan of Sokoto and the Shehu of Borno. He mentioned that they have discussed this issue of traditional rulers extensively and have met with the former president, senate president, and speaker of the House of Representatives in Abuja.
The Emir emphasized that the traditional institution has come to stay, whether they are alive or not. He concluded by stating that the role of the traditional institution cannot be overemphasized and that wherever politicians go, they will still come back to the traditional rulers.
