Burna Boy, the Grammy-winning Afrobeats singer, has finally responded to being described as a “new cat”.

In June, Davido labeled Burna Boy as Afrobeats’ “new cat”.

The ‘Timeless’ hitmaker said he and Wizkid were the first Nigerian artistes to place Afrobeats on the global map.

He added that he was excited to see “new cats” such as Burna Boy, Rema, Fireboy, Mayorkun, and Asake now excelling in the industry.

Davido’s comment stirred up heated conversations on social media.

During a recent interview with Apple Music’s Oldman Ebro, Burna Boy said he loves how people perceive him as new.

He also said being seen as new keeps him feeling young and extends his lifespan.

“It is a good thing that people think my movement is new,” he said.

“I love that. Because it keeps me young. It means like, I can do so much more, you know. It stretches my life span.

“I am living longer than I thought I would than I even planned to, you know.”

Born Damini Ogulu, Burna Boy gained prominence after releasing ‘Like to Party’, the lead single from his debut album ‘L.I.F.E’ (2013).

In 2021, the singer set a record in Nigeria after his fifth album ‘Twice As Tall’ won the ‘Best World Music Album’ category at the Grammy Awards.

In June 2023, he performed at the 2023 UEFA Champions League (UCL) final.

He was recently announced as the first African artiste to hit one billion Audiomack streams.

On July 9, he sold out a 41,000-capacity stadium in the United States.
