Renowned ex-manager of Chelsea, Roberto Di Matteo, contends that the contributions of Mikel Obi to the club were insufficiently acknowledged by the fanbase.
Mikel's tenure at Stamford Bridge spanned over a decade, leaving an indelible mark on the club's triumphs, encompassing the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup, and UEFA Super Cup.
Integral to the squad that clinched the club's inaugural Champions League in 2012 under Di Matteo, Mikel played a pivotal role in Chelsea's victory over Bayern Munich in the final.
His accolades include securing two Premier League titles and clinching four FA Cups.
Engaging in a dialogue on The Obi One Podcast, Di Matteo openly recognized the dedication Mikel brought to the team, drawing from his own experiences in a similar position.
"I occupied the same position as you, so I intimately understood the challenges you faced in a game and the emotions you experienced," remarked Di Matteo on The Obi One Podcast.
"The role you played in our team is somewhat of an unsung hero's role. You undertake tasks that the fans or critics, in general, might not fully comprehend or appreciate. However, having occupied a similar role, I precisely grasped how crucial you were for the team."
Over a 14-year international career spanning from 2005 to 2019, Mikel graced the field 91 times for Nigeria, netting six goals.
